While reducing risk, liability, and costs, TERRACAP AN additive provides a
safe, simple, and effective means for safely neutralizing a wide variety of
industrial and laboratory acid spills.
Simply pour and brush TERRACAP AN additive into the spill to quickly
eliminate the hazardous characteristics of the spilled acid. TERRACAP AN
additive forms a solid precipitate as neutralization proceeds reducing the
possibility for the spattering of acidic liquids. TERRACAP AN additive can be
used to clean up acids such as:
- Hydrochloric/Muriatic Acid |
|
- Acetic Acid |
- Sulfuric Acid
|
|
- Oxalic Acid
|
- Battery Acid
|
|
- Mercaptoacetic Acid
|
- Nitric Acid
|
|
- Glycolic Acid
|
- Chlorosulfonic Acid
|
|
- Chromic Acid
|
| - Phosphoric Acid |
|
- Selenic Acid |
Reduce Risk of Neutralizing Spilled Acids using a Safe, Effective Method
that Produces Minimal Heat, Less Fumes, and No Spatter
TERRACAP AN additive is superior to traditional methods such as sodium
bicarbonate and sodium carbonate which are relatively slow, generate significant
heat, sometimes spatter violently, and tend to aerosolize the acid gas due to the
formation of carbon dioxide gas. In some cases with carbonates, the salts formed
during neutralization can be extremely toxic. In addition, absorbed acids using dry
powder carbonates may not be completely neutralized and remain corrosive.
Carbonates are not typically recommended for neutralizing concentrated acids.
TERRACAP AN additive offers significant advantages over products such as acid
compatible booms, pads, and wipers in that many of these products do not actually
neutralize the acid, but instead simply mop up the liquid acid. Booms, wipers, and
pads generate a significant amount of solid waste and must be treated as
hazardous. TERRACAP AN additive reduces the total amount of solid wastes and
treats the hazard at the scene instead of just mopping it up, packaging it up, and
passing it on as a risk for someone else to deal with.
TERRACAP AN additive is ideal for these application areas: car/truck batteries,
electric cars/vehicles, forklift batteries, marine operations, back-up power batteries,
power control systems, industrial labs, school labs, medical labs, transportation
accidents/incidents, and manufacturing facilities.
How the Technology Works
The basic technology is a one step process using the non-toxic, nonhazardous
TERRACAP AN additive. When applied to a spill, the
TERRACAP AN additive's amorphous silica system reacts with the spilled
acid and begins precipitating into a solid residue within seconds after
application.
Acids, such as hydrochloric or sulfuric, react with alkaline TERRACAP AN
additive to form polymeric networks of inorganic silica as neutralization
occurs. The end product is a non-hazardous matrix of amorphous silicon
oxides (sand) and the neutralized acid anion, e.g. chloride or sulfate. After
mixing the appropriate amount of TERRACAP AN additive with the spilled
acid, the solid residue will turn to a light purple color when the residue is
approximately a neutral pH.
DO NOT USE TERRACAP AN ADDITIVE OR ANY PRODUCT CONTAINING SILICA TO
NEUTRALIZE HYDROFLUORIC (HF) ACID. SILICA CAN REACT WITH HF TO FORM
HIGHLY POISONOUS (SILICON TETRAFLOURIDE (SIF4)) GAS.
